In three years at the helm of RSC Anderlecht, Vincent Kompany has seen plenty of talent from the Belgian club’s famed academy. However, no prospect caught his attention like a certain Julian Duranville, going by an interview he had with ESPN after leaving Anderlecht for Burnley.

The current Bayern coach mentioned Duranville alongside Kylian Mbappé, Erling Haaland and Gavi when asked about his prediction for future Ballon d’Or candidates. While those three players maintained their standards over the years, the Belgian wonderkid is yet to impress German football.

In his pre-game presser, a reporter from Bild reminds Kompany about his bold prediction. "I just wanted to give a name that no one knew at that moment. Otherwise, it would be boring," responds Kompany on the spot. "I will always have a relationship with the Anderlecht guys. The Ballon d'Or might be too much pressure, but I hope he’ll have a great career in the future."

Duranville makes his Pro League debut under Kompany at the age of 16 years and 17 days. Since he joined the Black and Yellows for €8.5 million at the start of 2023, his excellent debut in a championship decider against Mainz is the only memorable appearance by the pacey winger.

“Julien was a huge talent in our esteemed youth system at Anderlecht. He’s the best of his generation. When you make it to professional football at the age of 16, the ingredients for a top career are always there," said Kompany when he added his name to the Ballon d’Or discussion.

The Bayern boss thinks multiple muscle injuries are the reason for his difficult time at Dortmund. Kompany extends his best wishes for Duranville before turning his focus toward tomorrow’s showdown. “He's our opponent on Saturday. That's why I hope he doesn't show his potential right away.”
