Eintracht made it two wins from two home games in 2023 with a 3-0 victory over Hertha BSC. Kolo Muani did the damage with two first-half goals, Buta adding a third in stoppage time.

Eagles dominant

Eintracht were on the front foot from the start at a sold-out Deutsche Bank Park, although they initially struggled to create clear chances against the compact Hertha defence. The breakthrough came in the 20th minute, when the Eagles were awarded a penalty after Randal Kolo Muani was tripped by Filip Uremovic as he tried to wriggle away by the byline. The Frenchman stepped up himself and confidently converted. Seven minutes later he made it 2-0, clipping the ball past goalkeeper Oliver Christensen to finish off a flowing move and notch his ninth Bundesliga goal of the season and his first brace in an SGE shirt.

That was the last notable action of the first half, with Kevin Trapp virtually a spectator in the Frankfurt goal on the day after extending his contract until 2026.

More even second half

The visitors made a triple substitution at the break but Eintracht remained in control after the restart, and even had the ball in the net two more times before the hour mark – but efforts from Kolo Muani and Tuta were disallowed for offside. Hertha then had by far their best chance of the game when Jessic Ngankam’s half-volley into the ground was spectacularly cleared off the line by Tuta.

That was the start of the Berliners’ best spell of the game, although they couldn’t find a way back into it. It looked destined to finish 2-0, particularly after Mario Götze missed two good chances within two minutes, but Aurélio Buta had more luck in the third minute of stoppage time when his low shot took a slight deflection from ex-Eagle Kevin-Prince Boateng on its way past a number of bodies and into the bottom corner.

Summary: Convincing win

Eintracht remain unbeaten in 2023 and move back up to fifth in the table following yet another impressive display. Kolo Muani will again take the headlines but it was a strong overall team performance, and although Hertha made more of a contest of it in the second half, the result never looked in doubt.
