Kobbie Mainoo’s future at Manchester United has become the subject of intense speculation ahead of deadline day.
After a difficult maiden campaign under Ruben Amorim, Mainoo enjoyed a promising pre-season, impressing many with his sharpness and physicality.
However, Amorim’s decision to overlook the highly-rated United academy product in the first two Premier League games of the new season has thrown the youngster’s United future into doubt, sparking interest from a number of clubs.
Recently, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming five Premier League sides, including Brentford and Brighton, are interested in the dynamic midfielder.
Now, FootballTransfers claim Brighton have “spoken with representatives” of the United midfielder over a potential move.
It is understood United are “fully aware” of the Seagulls’ approach. Further, Mainoo is thought to be open to leaving United after struggling for regular starts under Amorim and is “intrigued” by the possibility of a move to Brighton.
The 20-year-old is targeting a place in Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad, and would need to deliver a strong season to attract the German’s attention.
Brighton are “keen to capitalise” on the situation as they view Mainoo as a “strong fit” for their system under Fabian Hürzeler.
Meanwhile, it is suggested that United could also benefit from this move in the future.
The report states: “Sources have suggested this deal could help facilitate Carlos Baleba heading the other way in the future.”
United tried to sign Baleba early this month, having held talks with the Cameroonian’s representatives. The all-action midfielder was prepared to move to Old Trafford.
However, Brighton’s not-for-sale stance led to United ending their pursuit this summer. Baleba remains on the club’s radar for the next summer window.
If United “show a willingness to offer a reasonable deal” for Mainoo, it would “greatly bolster” their chances of striking a deal for the sought-after Brighton midfielder next year.
