Klopp welcomes more competitive title race as it makes football more ‘exciting’ | OneFootball

Jurgen Klopp has welcomed a more competitive title race this term, after his Liverpool side romped to the title last term.

The Reds ended their 30-year wait for a league title last term following a hugely dominant league campaign, with Klopp’s men finishing the season eighteen points clear of second-placed Manchester City.

Their impressive displays saw them record the most ever Premier League wins in a season (32) as well as enjoying the longest run of consecutive league wins (18), with the league, in truth, a one-horse race for pretty much the whole of the season.

Previous title races have often been close run affairs between City and the Reds, yet in recent years rarely have a number of sides been involved at the top of the table in the latter stages of a season.

This hugely entertaining campaign has seen a number of unexpected sides find themselves near the summit, with Manchester United, Everton, Tottenham and Leicester City all well placed to challenge at present.

The likes of Southampton and West Ham are also not far off the top four, while big spenders Chelsea are not too be ruled out, particularly if they can put a run of results together, such is the talent at Frank Lampard’s disposal.

While Liverpool and their fanbase would surely have loved to produced another dominant showing this term, Klopp admitted that it is ‘exciting’ to have so many sides in contention.

“It must be exciting, it must be interesting, it would be boring if it was always the same team,” Klopp told his pre-match press conference ahead of today’s home clash with Man United.

“Like in the Nineties and early 2000s with United, or earlier with Liverpool. So it’s nice that domination like this will never happen.

“I was a little bit afraid of Manchester City doing something like that and obviously they still can, so it was important somebody stepped in and showed other teams are important in football as well.

“That there’s not only one way to play to be successful. It gave all of us the chance to try it again this season.”
