Jurgen Klopp has suggested that the intensity of the Premier League may be a factor behind English clubs’ exits from European competitions this week.

Liverpool were knocked out of the Europa League despite winning 1-0 in their quarter-final second leg clash with Atalanta, going out 3-1 on aggregate following their first-leg defeat at Anfield.

Their Premier League title rivals, Arsenal and Manchester City, were both knocked out of the Champions League on Wednesday, while West Ham were also eliminated from the Europa League. Aston Villa, meanwhile, needed a penalty shoot-out to progress past Lille into the Conference League semi-finals.

“It (the Premier League) is the best league in the world,” Klopp said.

“I watch a lot of football and when you watch the leagues, whatever other league, Italy improved a lot over the years and back to its best pretty much, Spain is obviously fantastic, Bundesliga is there, France, everywhere they play good football.

“But the Premier League is the most intense league definitely. Besides Aston Villa, I think all (English) teams are out in the quarter-finals.

“Without me saying it, maybe someone writes an article about that tomorrow.”
