Jurgen Klopp says he remains ‘positive’ about the future of Georginio Wijnaldum despite persistent reports linking the midfielder with Barcelona.

Wijnaldum has entered the final months of his contract on Merseyside with terms yet to be agreed over an extension, with Barcelona reportedly courting the Netherlands international ahead of a potential free transfer move.

Ronald Koeman is understood to be keen on reuniting with the 30-year-old at Barcelona after previously coaching the midfielder during his time in charge of the Dutch national side, as the Spanish giants look to overhaul their squad following a difficult period at the Camp Nou.

Wijnaldum has been a key figure for Liverpool since arriving at Anfield from Newcastle four-and-a-half years ago, making 201 appearances in all competitions and forming an important part of the sides that have lifted the Champions League and Premier League over the past two campaigns.

Klopp reiterated his desire to keep the player ahead of Saturday’s clash with Brighton and insists he remains ‘positive’ about agreeing a new deal with the midfielder, despite Wijnaldum being free to negotiate a pre-contract with foreign sides from January.

“I cannot really say a lot about it but I would be happy if he would stay here,” said Klopp at his pre-match press conference. “I am pretty happy with Gini as you can see when you look at most of the line-ups! He has played always good for me, that’s why he’s played the amount of games he has.

“He played for us in plenty of different positions and he is in a good moment, thank God. Long may it continue. It’s good and there’s nothing else to say about it. As long as nothing is decided, everything is possible. I am positive.”
