Jurgen Klopp has offered an update on the contract situation involving midfielder Gini Wijnaldum as the Liverpool man sees his deal expire at the end of this current season.

The Dutchman has been a regular presence in the middle of the park for the Reds again this season, with him one of the few players – touch wood – to have managed to avoid injury so far.

His contract runs out at the end of this season, though, and reports from Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport – as transcribed by Tribal Football – are claiming that he has rejected the latest offer and is set for an exit.

Indeed, there are shades of Emre Can with this current situation at the moment, and Klopp referenced that when offering his own update on matters,

Quoted by The Mirror, Klopp had this to say:

“We’ve had situations like this before, with Emre Can for example. He played and he gave his absolutely everything until the last day of his contract and Gini will do the same, no doubt about that.

“I would be happy if he would stay here. I am pretty happy with Gini as you can see when you look at most of the line-ups. Gini is one of the best people I have ever met and one of the best players I’ve ever trained and he is an outstanding person so there is no issue.”

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

There can be no question that Gini Wijnaldum will remain professional throughout the season, no matter what happens at the end of it, but it will be a real shame to lose him – particularly on a free.

Of course, there is still time to see the Dutchman agree a new contract but that window of opportunity is only getting smaller now as the days pass by.

Fans will back the Reds whatever the outcome here, but it will undoubtedly be a blow to lose such a reliable presence in the side.
