Jurgen Klopp has insisted that ‘goal machine’ Mo Salah is ‘up there’ with the likes of Robert Lewandowski, following another prolific start to the season for the Liverpool forward.

In what’s been a strong start to the campaign for the Reds, their shining light once again has been the Egyptian international who has already registered four goals and two assists in the opening five Premier League games, as well as netting further strike in the Champions League.

That fine opening to the season saw the 29-year-old bring up a century of top-flight goals in English football, with 99 of those coming in the 150 league outings since his arrival at Anfield in 2017, while he netted just twice during his brief spell with Chelsea before spending two-and-a-half-years in Italy.

Such prolific form in recent times is all the more impressive considering the former Roma man is not even an out-and-out centre forward, having spent the majority of his Liverpool career playing on the right of the club’s feared front three.

Despite not being an orthodox striker, Klopp has insisted that his current star is ‘up there’ with Bayern Munich ace Robert Lewandowski, the Poland international having worked under the Reds boss during their respective times at Borussia Dortmund.

“Mo Salah is absolutely up there with him, there is no doubt about that,” Klopp said at his press conference on Friday. “Mo is a goal machine. His professionalism is absolutely second to none. He does everything to be always fit and stay on track. First in, last out, all these kind of things – that’s Mo.

“On top of that, apart from his technical skill set, he is desperate to score goals and that is helpful as well. That is exactly how it is with Lewi. That’s good and very helpful for a football player.

“Whatever you do on a pitch, whatever you create, you need somebody who brings the ball over the line and in the back of the net. Mo is absolutely there with the best I ever saw. He knows that. The numbers he has are insane. I’m obviously blessed to work with some good players.”

Salah could net his 100th league goal for Liverpool on Saturday evening when the club take on newly-promoted Brentford.
