Jurgen Klopp hailed Liverpool’s ‘exceptional attitude’ as a second string side hammered League One side Lincoln 7-2 in the Carabao Cup on Thursday night.

The Reds continued their fine early season form with a dominant display against their third tier opponents, the away side demonstrating their wealth of quality despite having made ten changes from the side that beat Chelsea on Sunday – Virgil Van Dijk the only player to have kept his place.

The visitors were quickly ahead following a glorious free-kick from forgotten man Xherdan Shaqiri, before Takumi Minamino and Curtis Jones both saw efforts curl into the top corner to put the game beyond doubt midway through the first half. Jones added a fourth soon after, creating space with some fine footwork and seeing a deflected effort sail past ‘keeper Alex Palmer.

Minamino also grabbed a second straight after half-time, before Adetayo Edun pulled one back for the hosts with a neat finish into the bottom corner. Marko Grujic then added a sixth after firing into the bottom corner, with Lewis Montsma adding Lincoln’s second from a fine header less than a minute later.

Champions League hero of 2018/19 Divock Origi then added some late gloss to the scoreline and left his manager beaming, the former Borussia Dortmund boss stating that he was ‘happy with everything’ he saw from what was essentially a second string eleven.

“We played a really good football game tonight,” Klopp told BBC Radio 5 Live.

”It was easy on the eye. We passed the ball and finished situations off. The boys wanted to play football and showed an exceptional attitude.

“That’s how it should be [Liverpool’s second XI playing like their first]. Wear the shirt and show who you are. I’m happy with everything.

“Two goals we conceded were not nice, but it’s not a massive problem. You can have struggles in a game like this.”

The Reds are back in Premier League action on Monday evening as they face Arsenal at Anfield.
