Klopp delights in “outstanding” performance of Takumi Minamino

Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp was hugely impressed by the performance of former RB Salzburg star Takumi Minamino against Lincoln City.

Minamino, along with Curtis Jones, bagged a brace in the 7-2 win at the LNER Stadium. Xherdan Shaqiri, Marko Grujic and Divock Origi were Liverpool’s other goalscorers.

Speaking at his post-match press conference, Klopp had some special words of praise when asked about Minamino’s display in the Carabao Cup win.

“I loved Taki’s game tonight, to be honest – it was absolutely outstanding and involved in so many situations. More and more, I think we all realise where his qualities are. Wherever he will play in the end, he will end up in the centre: if he plays on the left-wing or the right-wing, he will play in the half-spaces or the centre because that’s where he has his real strength. He looked really well. The opponent had to kick off seven times [after our goals] and the first guy who chased the opponent again when they received the pass was Taki. He set the rhythm for all these pressing and counter-pressing situations, so I really, really liked the game tonight.”

Minamino will no doubt be called upon in more games as this congested 2020/21 season progresses. The 25-year-old is hugely versatile, possessing the ability to fill in as an attacking midfielder or anywhere along the forward line.

The Japan international scored Liverpool’s equaliser against Arsenal in the Community Shield at Wembley in August. Will he get the chance at some more game time against The Gunners this Monday night at Anfield? He certainly didn’t do his chances any harm this week.
