Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp believes his side’s 2-1 defeat to Tottenham should be replayed after a Luis Díaz goal was wrongly disallowed by VAR.
The Reds were reduced to nine men during Saturday’s clash in north London, and ultimately beaten by a 96th-minute Joël Matip own goal.
But it was the disallowed Díaz goal in the first half which has caused the Premier League’s biggest refereeing controversy of the season, with the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) subsequently apologising for a “significant human error” which saw the goal wrongly chalked off for offside.
Speaking on Wednesday ahead of Liverpool’s Europa League meeting with Union Saint-Gilloise, Klopp stated his belief that replaying the match would be the just course of action.
“Yes, it was a mistake,” said Klopp.
“An obvious mistake. I think there would have been solutions. I think the outcome should be a replay. Probably won’t happen.
“As far as I can remember, something like that never happened, that’s why I think a replay should be played.”
On Tuesday, PGMOL released the full audio clip of the communication between the on-field officials and the VAR, which confirmed that the goal was disallowed due to a misunderstanding over what the on-field referee’s decision had been in the first place.
VAR Darren England and assistant Dan Cook have since been taken off Premier League duty this weekend, but Klopp says hearing the audio didn’t change anything for him.
“The audio didn’t change it at all because I was not really interested in why things happen,” he said.
“I saw the outcome, I saw a goal, and I saw it didn’t count. It’s really important that we deal with it in a proper way.
“They didn’t do it on purpose and we shouldn’t forget that.”
