There are various friendly fixtures to enjoy across the world featuring some big names on Thursday. This is what went down …
Scorers: Josan 45′; Gelhardt 60′, Klich 88′
Mateusz Klich scored a late wonder goal to secure a come-from-behind win for Leeds against Elche in Spain to win the Festa d’Elx Trophy.
Elche took the lead on the stroke of half-time in their bid to secure the title they play for annually when Josan found the net.
60' GAME ON! Greenwood breaks into the box, cuts it back to a waiting Gelhardt, who slots home! 1-1–
The Whites pulled level after an hour when a quick move forward ended with Sam Greenwood supplying Joe Gelhardt with a simple finish from close range.
Bit with two minutes on the clock, Klich struck for the late winner by weaving forward and when the opportunity opened up from 25 yards, he let fly to win it in style – with the home side appearing rather despondent at surrendering the trophy.
Scorers: Joelinton 8′, 43′, Almirón 75′, 81′, Stephenson 86′
Newcastle’s latest trip to Saudi Arabia is proving a success after they defeated local side Al-Hilal with ease on Thursday evening with Joelinton and Miguel Almirón spearheading the charge.
The Brazilian displayed why he may have been worthy of featuring at the country’s neighbours to the east in Qatar with his showing in the first half of this one.
He opened the scoring on eight minutes with a back post header before doubling their advantage shortly before half-time by squeezing past the goalkeeper after an excellent Joe Willock pass.
Debutant Loris Karius made some important saves to keep the clean sheet intact at the interval before Almirón made sure of the win as his outstanding form showed no signs of being impacted by the break as he added another delightful individual goal to his collection.
And shortly afterwards he had a second after being picked out at the back post and he finished with aplomb for the fourth before Dylan Stephenson wrapped things up following a quick break upfield.
With the win, they return to Tyneside with some silverware too – the Diriyah Season Cup in tow.
Scorers: Gabriel 19′, Nketiah 33′, Vieira 39′
Arsenal started their winter trip for the Dubai Super Cup in style by blowing Lyon away with a clinical performance, while also claiming a penalty shootout bonus point.
Gabriel gave them an early lead when he netted with a close range header from Martin Ødegaard’s corner after Reiss Nelson had earlier been denied the opener by the upright.
On 33 minutes, Eddie Nketiah put forward his case for being the Gabriel Jesus replacement Arsenal needed by finishing off a counter-attack which began with his former team-mate Alexandre Lacazette losing possession on the edge of the Gunners’ area.
They made it 3-0 before the break when Fábio Vieira, who assisted Nketiah for the second, capped off another fantastic team move by thumping into the top corner from the edge of the area.
Nine minutes after the interval, Arsenal were again denied by the woodwork when Marquinhos struck the crossbar before making nine substitutions which diluted the intensity of the contest as Arsenal ran out comfortable winners.
A penalty shootout followed with an extra point up for grabs and Arsenal claimed it with a 2-1 win in a dismal contest as Marquinhos and Matt Smith netted, while former Gunner Jeff Reine-Adélaïde’s effort from 12 yards was saved by Karl Hein, who also pulled off three more stops to make himself the hero.
However, neither Cătălin Cîrjan or Rayan Cherki will want to see their awful failed Panenka attempts back after this one.
Scorers: Ings 67′, Dunk OG 84′; Undav 73′, 81′
Despite a second half brace from Deniz Undav, Brighton conceded a late goal to share the spoils with Aston Villa in an entertaining Dubai friendly.
Unai Emery again went with a 4-4-2 system that saw Leon Bailey partner Ollie Watkins in attack and it was his side who had the better of it in a scoreless opening half.
Bailey came close to an opener after the break by curling just off target before Danny Ings continued his scoring streak by latching onto a defensive error to tap home one of the easiest goals he’ll ever score.
But that advantage lasted just six minutes before the Seagulls levelled when Andrew Moran did well in midfield and after Villa failed to close him down, Deniz Undav made no mistake by ruthlessly finishing low beyond Robin Olsen.
And with nine minutes remaining, he struck again for the confidence boosting goals his Brighton career needs as compatriot Pascal Groß found him in space and again the striker found the corner with a clinical finish.
This time, it was his side who were guilty of switching off shortly after taking the lead though as a well-worked Villa set-piece routine culminated in Lewis Dunk putting through his own goal after a scramble and ensure things ended level.
