After having not started a match since 23 February, Ajax’s Klaas Jan Huntelaar recently started back-to-back Eredivisie games and scored three goals.
When speaking to club media, the 37-year-old said his improved fitness and “connection” with teammate Antony is key to his recent form.
“It is the way it is … I’m just fit,” said Huntelaar. “Still it takes some getting used to [playing] ninety minutes again.”
“The feeling of getting into a match rhythm, knowing that you are playing again, is just different from when you start on the bench.”
“Antony and I have a connection. He often knows where I am,” he said. “In the end, it’s about me choosing a position and he sees it.”
Ajax will face Willem II on 23 December before heading into the Christmas break and the centre-forward suggested he could appear again.
Still, Huntelaar emphasized that focusing on winning three points remains the goal for him and the team.
“The most important thing is that we keep the lead on the rankings and grab three points … we want to be at the top when we enter the second half of the season.”
Ajax currently sit at the top of the table with 33 points.
