Virginia Kirchberger is being added to Austria’s EURO squad shortly ahead of the team’s opening match of the tournament against England.
A week ago, Austria coach Irene Fuhrmann officially named her final squad for the tournament and included Virginia Kirchberger as a reserve. The 29-year-old has now been given a spot in the 23-player squad, with the team set to take on hosts England at Old Trafford on Wednesday 6 July for their opening group match. Kirchberger is one of two players to be added to the 23 after injuries ruled out Maria Plattner and Lisa Kolb, taking the SGE contingent up to four. Despite a double (upper and lower) leg fracture in November 2021, Kirchberger was part of the Austria set-up throughout preparations for the EURO, although she did not get to play in any of the friendlies. The defender will now though be hoping to see Women’s European Championship action for the second time in her career, after taking part back in 2017.
