Kim Little, Pernille Harder: 6 standout players from the WSL this week | OneFootball

Another thrilling week in the Women’s Super League saw 22 goals scored in just six games.

Chelsea emphasised their title credentials with a 6-1 win against Manchester United, while Arsenal continued their fine start to the season with an emphatic 5-0 victory over a struggling Manchester City.

Elsewhere, West Ham thrashed newly-promoted Leicester City 4-0, Tottenham edged past Reading 1-0, Aston Villa handed Brighton their first defeat of the season and Everton beat Birmingham 3-1 to register their first win of the campaign.

There were a number of notable individual displays, but GiveMeSport Women has picked out one standout player from each of the weekend’s matches:

Kim Little

The entire Arsenal side were fantastic against City. Vivianne Miedema, Katie McCabe and Leah Williamson showcased their world-class credentials, but it was captain Little who led from the front.

The Scottish midfielder demonstrated neat footwork to score the Gunners’ second goal and calmly converted from the spot for the fourth.

Having announced her retirement from the Scottish national team at the beginning of this month, Little is now free to focus purely on Arsenal in what is proving to be a fruitful season.

Pernille Harder

Chelsea’s forward line ran riot against United, with Sam Kerr scoring twice and Fran Kirby notching her 50th WSL goal.

It was Harder who stole the show though with an outstanding solo goal. The Danish star arrived for a record transfer fee from Wolfsburg last season and is starting to justify her price tag.

Speaking after the game, Chelsea head coach Emma Hayes praised Harder for her performances so far this season.

“Pernille this pre-season has been unbelievable,” Hayes said. “I’m so proud of her for that goal. Last game against Everton I don’t know how she didn’t score, she did everything. But Pernille is a top top player.”

Tameka Yallop

Yallop arrived in East London from the Brisbane Roar this season and the midfielder had a debut to remember as Olli Harder’s side ran out 4-0 winners over Leicester.

The 30-year-old scored West Ham’s first and almost had a second late on in the game, only for the goal to be declared a Kirstie Levelll own goal.

The Australian has 91 caps for her country and looks to be a shrewd bit of business by the Hammers.

Izzy Christiansen

Everton had suffered a dismal start to the season but got their campaign back on track with a convincing 3-1 win over Birmingham.

Christiansen was at the heart of this win, controlling the midfield and assisting Rikke Sevecke’s injury-time goal.

The 30-year-old has 31 caps for England so far and may well add to this tally with more performances of this quality.

Emily Gielnik

Gielnik is another Australian who has moved to the WSL and the forward scored the winner for Villa against high-flying Brighton.

The 29-year-old is playing in England for the second time, having spent a season at Liverpool in 2012.

Villa remain unbeaten this season and currently sit third in the WSL table.

Jessica Naz

Still just 21-years-old, Naz helped Tottenham maintain their perfect start to the season with a late winner against Reading.

Naz has been with Spurs since 2018 and helped the side gain promotion to the WSL.

She missed the 2019/20 season because of an anterior cruciate ligament injury but has signed a contract through to June 2022.
