Kieran Trippier hails 'remarkable' Gareth Southgate ahead of landmark Switzerland clash | OneFootball

Kieran Trippier has hailed Gareth Southgate for his "remarkable" job as England manager as he prepares to take charge of his 100th game.

Southgate will reach the landmark in Saturday's Euro 2024 quarter-final against Switzerland, but is under increasing pressure to deliver a strong performance and finally end England's wait for a major trophy.

With some fans already calling for Southgate to be relieved of his duties at the end of the tournament, Trippier was keen to remind critics exactly why they should not "undervalue" his accomplishments.

"I think what Gareth's done since he took charge has been nothing but remarkable, really," Trippier said. "When I first arrived, we had many meetings about what it means to represent England and he really installed that real togetherness in the squad from when he first took charge to now.

"You've seen how much he's developed. And I think what he's done for England is nothing but remarkable, really.

"Everybody's entitled to their own opinion, but I think Gareth certainly knows, from myself, the players, what we think of him. He is an unbelievable, unbelievable person and somebody that we all, every single person in this camp, respects."

Trippier is not the only England player to show strong support to Southgate during this tournament. Midfielder Declan Rice made an emphatic statement of commitment to the manager following the last-16 triumph over Slovakia.

"We'd do anything to protect this manager, protect each other," Rice told the media.

"We'll keep going and keep fighting and what we've got as a group tonight showed out there. It's an honour to be a part of it and we're going to give it everything."
