Kieran Trippier disrespect is astonishing

When I read many of the comments from Newcastle United fans about Kieran Trippier, I find it quite astonishing.

Just over three weeks to go until the new season kicks off and I know one thing for sure.

When it comes to the Newcastle United fans I am referring to, they simply want Kieran Trippier to leave Newcastle United, regardless of anything else

As for why they want him to leave, the things mentioned are usually his age, his form not as good last season as the one before (often in far less polite terms!), as well as how the transfer fee and PSR benefit we’d get for him in terms of helping to bring in new signings.

I honestly think it is ridiculous.

If Kieran Trippier himself wants to leave for whatever reason(s), then of course that is something very different.

However, why any Newcastle United fans are desperate to get Kieran Trippier out of St James’ Park, just leaves me shaking my head.

Like a lot of Newcastle’s players, he didn’t hit the heights as often as he did in the 2022/23 season, however, last season he was nowhere near as bad as some of the more hysterical fans claim. He had a poor handful of performances midway through the season or so but otherwise, I thought Kieran Trippier was decent to good, at times very good. I think that like Dan Burn, at times Kieran Trippier played when he really shouldn’t have done, to help Eddie Howe who had so many players missing.

Age catches up with us all eventually but I didn’t see that with Kieran Trippier at Newcastle United last season. Indeed, I thought he was exceptional in the Champions League and nowhere more so than when facing Kylian Mbappe in both PSG games. As I recall it, Mbappe ended up heading over to the other wing both matches because Trippier played him so well.

As for anybody thinking that selling Kieran Trippier would be some great financial/PSR positive for Newcastle United, I find it laughable. As for anybody believing that Eddie Howe and/or Newcastle United believing that, well that is shattered by the fact that they turned down Bayern Munich’s third and final bid of £12.8m in January, when the German club wanted him in particular to help their Champions League campaign last season.

I think with Kieran Trippier it is for sure the case that he is far more valuable to Newcastle United than any monetary/PSR benefit that another club might give NUFC. Trippier turns 34 in September and if say somebody was willing to pay £25m-£30m then you might have an argument, however, in reality, it would probably be something like £7m to £8m somebody might give, for a short-term fix at their club, as no resale value.

Kieran Trippier has been key to both Newcastle United’s defending and attacking since arriving. In 2022/23 he was a key part of the best defence in the whole Premier League, no other team conceded fewer goals, whilst at the same time he had 10 direct goal involvements in all competitions, scoring one and nine assists. Then it was 12 direct goal involvements in all competitions last (2023/24) season, one goal and 11 assists.

I find it amazing that so many Newcastle United fans take some things so much for granted.

This is even before we get to the fact that Kieran Trippier has also been an outstanding captain on the pitch since he arrived, with Jamaal Lascelles rarely starting games.

The attacking stats are in reality far far better where Trippier is concerned when you dig further down than assists, as he is invariably involved earlier in the moves that eventually lead to goals.

As for feeling his age, well I thought he was exceptional out in Germany and one of England’s best players, starting all six games that took them to the final. England’s defensive problems were overwhelmingly down the other side of the pitch in the run to the final and it was a massive blunder by Southgate when dropping Trippier and playing Luke Shaw in the final.

Shaw had not started a game for England in 13 months and it was five months since he had started one for Man U. A number of times Shaw caught ball watching/out of position, including on the key opening goal when Lamine Yamal got behind Shaw and the ball was played to the Spain player, he had total freedom and time/space to then assist Williams for that first goal. No way would Kieran Trippier have allowed that. Plus of course, Kieran Trippier performed at that level whilst asked to play out of position on the left side of England’s defence.

Another argument put forward of course by these Newcastle fans, is that Kieran Trippier needs to go so that Tino Livramento can play regularly as the first-choice right-back.

Unbelievable, you would think that last season’s unprecedented injury crisis at Newcastle United had never happened. Indeed, Eddie Howe revealed last week in Germany that there is still a significant carryover from last season’s problems. With as well as Lascelles, Botman and Miley all definitely missing the start of the new season, the likes of Willock and Targett still not able to join group training (as of Friday 19 July), oh, and of course Tino Livramento as well!

I hear comments saying that if Trippier goes, then as well as Livramento, Newcastle have the likes of Krafth and even Murphy who can play right-back. Well, that pair can play right-back, just nowhere near the levels that Kieran Trippier can. People say Emil Krafth never lets us down when filling in. I think for sure he has given it everything and most of the time does ok up to a point, however, he simply can’t do a lot of the things that Trippier can do, the level he can play at, as has been shown for years with England and in club football, including Newcastle United and winning La Liga with Atletico Madrid.

I think it is universally agreed that Tino Livramento is a very exciting prospect but the fact is that he is 21 years old, missed an entire year due to a bad injury and has still only started 37 Premier League matches in his entire career, including 12 last season with NUFC.

I also believe that whilst some Newcastle United fans have been incredibly OTT negative with Kieran Trippier, they have gone the other way with Tino Livramento. The reality for me last season was that his performances, as starter and sub, ranged from excellent right through at times to not-so-good. I don’t think Tino was ever terrible, however, for sure last season he showed inexperience at times and inconsistency, no surprise at his age and especially how few games he has played in his career so far.

He is still learning on the job and who better to learn from than… Kieran Trippier.

I think Tino Livramento in a year’s time will be so much further forward in his development and ability if Trippier stays at Newcastle United.

Eddie Howe has repeatedly said how much he values his experienced players, on AND off the pitch. Howe saying how much help the likes of Dummett and Ritchie amongst others have been to other younger/inexperienced players, so in that respect, I reckon the NUFC Head Coach will be even more desperate to keep Kieran Trippier.

Personally, I would go further.

You look at the shambles we had for a decade and a half, everything ran on as little/no investment as possible. That includes the coaching side at all levels. If possible, I think we need people of the calibre of Kieran Trippier to stay at the club long-term, become the coaches, become part of Eddie Howe’s future backroom team.

How lucky were we to see Kieran Trippier willing to come to St James’ Park in January 2022?

In my opinion, I just hope we are lucky enough to see him wanting to stay for at least one more season, continue the work he has done for two and a half years in having been one of the key people who has helped Eddie Howe to achieve so much.
