The initial feedback from the club was that hopefully this would prove only a short absence.

However, a setback in his calf issue recovery has now seen Kieran Trippier miss these last eight Newcastle United matches.

At the weekend, Kieran Trippier was quoted by official club media:

“I have had a calf issue and at this stage of the season and with the amount of games I have played, we need to take extra precautions.

“It is important that there are no setbacks.

“I don’t want to come back and then re-injure myself.

“So I’m just ticking every box.”

The caution is understandable, considering the injury problems that have blighted the Newcastle United squad this season. Plus of course, the European Championships in Germany kick-off in seven weeks time.

Whilst Kieran Trippier was giving a note of caution at the weekend, a media update on Monday has given a far more positive message.

Craig Hope at The Mail has reported in an exclusive, that his information is that Kieran Trippier is expected back playing very soon.

Hope says that the Newcastle star is currently in Dubai, where he is working with a physio and fitness coach.

However, the man from The Mail states that there is confidence within the club that Kieran Trippier will be back for the final three matches of the season. Starting with the Newcastle v Brighton home match on Saturday 11 May, then the away games at Manchester United (Wednesday 15 May) and Brentford (Sunday 19 May).

So seemingly the plan is to allow Kieran Trippier another couple of weeks, miss Burnley away on Saturday, then back for that final packed week or so of action.

With those final three matches in quick succession, Eddie Howe will of course be hoping that he has as many options as possible, both as potential starters and as options off the bench. Callum Wilson, Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall are now all back available amongst the possible starters in this Newcastle United squad, whilst there have been positive noises regarding the likes of Joelinton, Almiron and Pope all possibly playing again this season as well.

In terms of those who definitely won’t play again this season, no chance of seeing Tonali, Lascelles, Botman, Willock and Miley before next season.
