Kieran Trippier has retired from international football, ending a seven year and 54-cap career with England.
The 33-year-old has decided to call time on his Three Lions’ career just ahead of interim manager Lee Carsley announcing his first squad.
It is unclear if Trippier would have been part of that squad given he has lost his place in the Newcastle United line-up in recent weeks to Tino Livramento, who could be called up later today, but it is still a significant announcement.
The full-back, who played on both sides of the defence for his country, was first called up in 2017 and became a key man throughout Gareth Southgate’s reign, playing in two World Cups and two European Championships.
Trippier’s sole goal for England was a free-kick which gave them the lead in the 2018 World Cup semi-final against Croatia, which ultimately ended in a 2-1 loss.
Having ended his international career, the former Newcastle captain could also be soon leaving Tyneside, with rumours linking him with a move to Everton before tomorrow’s transfer deadline.
