Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has confirmed a deal has been struck to re-sign Arsenal left-back Kieran Tierney this summer.

Tierney left boyhood side Celtic for Arsenal in 2019 but, after six years at the Emirates Stadium, will be released on a free transfer at the end of the season after the Gunners declined to trigger their option to extend his contract.

A number of Premier League sides were keen on Tierney but Celtic moved aggressively to get themselves to the front of the queue for his signature, and Rodgers has now opened the door to luring Tierney back up to Scotland as early as this week.

"He's still, at this moment, an Arsenal player," Rodgers told the media. "I think we're agreed that it will definitely take place in the summer. If we can do it beforehand, then great.

"I don't want to speak too much on it with the greatest respect, because he's not a Celtic player here now with us. But, if we were able to do it, of course, we would like to do that, but that's out of our control at this moment in time."

Tierney is by no means a regular starter under Mikel Arteta, but the Gunners boss may be reluctant to lose the 27-year-old this month after offering Tierney a handful of appearances off the bench in recent weeks.

Having missed the start of the season with a hamstring injury, Tierney has made four appearances in January for a total of 39 minutes, providing cover after a spell out injured for Riccardo Calafiori. He may be retained if Oleksandr Zinchenko is allowed to depart before the end of the month - the Ukrainian has drawn interest from Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund after falling behind Myles Lewis-Skelly in the pecking order.
