Kieran Tierney has avoided a serious injury, despite requiring a scan on a calf strain ahead of Thursday’s game against Crystal Palace.

One of Arsenal’s best players in recent weeks, it was a shame to see Kieran Tierney absent from the squad against Crystal Palace on Thursday. They certainly missed him, offering little in the way of a serious threat from the left-hand side.

Before the game, Arsenal described the decision to leave Tierney out as a “precaution”, but Mikel Arteta gave a more worrying update after the game, admitting he would need further testing and they didn’t know how long he’d be out.

Fortunately, David Ornstein reports that the result of Tierney’s scan was positive. He hasn’t suffered a muscle tear, and may well be fit in time for Monday’s match against Newcastle.

Chris Wheatley corroborates Ornstein’s story, adding that Tierney merely has a ‘slight calf strain’, which isn’t thought to be anything serious.

This is a big boost for Arsenal because they don’t really have an alternative left-back. Ainsley Maitland-Niles struggled against Crystal Palace, and Bukayo Saka should be playing on the right-wing, where he’s been the most effective this season.

Until they have Tierney back, Arsenal are going to struggle with teams deliberately showing them down the left side, knowing they can’t cause any problems.
