Ipswich Town will be making summer transfer window preparations ahead of their return to the Championship.

The Suffolk-based outfit endured a miserable return to the big time, failing to bridge the gap between second tier sides and the established top-flight clubs after Kieran McKenna’s men collected just 22 points.

Ipswich know that they will be expected to leapfrog straight back to the Premier League due to the superior financial resources they possess over the majority of the division, although cuts are naturally expected to take place due to relegation.

It is certain to be an imperative period for Ipswich to ensure they are fighting towards the top end of the second tier table, and FLW’s Ipswich Town fan pundit has detailed what his nightmare scenario would be for the club this summer.

Ipswich Town, Kieran McKenna exit nightmare scenario revealed

Speaking to Football League World, Ipswich Town fan pundit Adam Wilkin admitted that the Tractor Boys’ biggest fear this summer should be losing Kieran McKenna to a top-flight team, given the 39-year-old’s ability to immensely improve the playing squad since taking the hotseat at Portman Road.

Wilkin said: “I think the obvious nightmare scenario in the transfer window is none of the players, it's losing McKenna if a Premier League club comes in for him.

“I can't begin to describe the impact that Kieran McKenna has had on the football club, the style of football that he's brought in, the development that some players who started off as average League One players have seen under him and become Championship superstars, and even fought their own in the Premier League.

“He's an incredible manager. One of the best that we've had, and I'm sure he will go on and manage in the Premier League at some point, but hopefully not by the end of this transfer window. I think he is the biggest part of the club culture, setting standards, and the success of how the club has gone.

“I think losing him would be a bigger blow than losing any of the players based on our recruitment strategy and the players that we've brought in. I don't think there's one or two players that you would be as upset at losing as McKenna himself.”

Ipswich Town will be one of the promotion favourites should they retain Kieran McKenna

Kieran McKenna has done a superb job at Ipswich Town and is one of the major factors to helping the club become only the fifth-ever side to achieve back-to-back promotions from League One into the Premier League.

While the top-flight campaign didn’t go as everybody connected to the club would have wanted, it was a beneficial learning curve for the Northern Irishman, who is sure to take on board what he needs to improve on and implement it in his next Premier League spell, whether that be with Ipswich or another club.

But with Brentford seemingly keen on appointing set-piece coach Keith Andrews and McKenna previously showing loyalty to turn down the Brighton role, the Tractor Boys boss looks increasingly likely to remain at the club, which is fantastic news.

McKenna would be able to use his first experience of gaining promotion out of the second tier to great effect, and if Ipswich can keep hold of the majority of their squad, then you wouldn’t look past them to be competing for another automatic promotion place.

Keeping hold of the ex-Manchester United first-team coach will be vital to Ipswich’s long-term success, and they are set to be a force to be reckoned with once again in the Championship, should he remain at the helm.
