Joel Glazers’s recent suggestion that he is open to part-fan ownership of Man United is yet another “cynical” cash grab.
That is according to finance expert and Football Insider columnist Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively after United released an official statement on the topic last week.
In the open letter to the fanbase, Glazer wrote: “We believe in the principle of fans owning shares in the club.”
The owner also committed to a new “era of dialogue” with supporters following the fury sparked by the club’s attempt to join the European Super League.
But Maguire questioned the 50-year-old’s motives, explaining that moving towards a fan ownership model would line his pockets even further.
He told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams: “My concern is that the biggest beneficiary of fans owning more shares would be the Glazer family.
“That’s because if you have a fixed number of shares, increased demand means increased value of product and share price.
“So the cynic in me thinks that Joel Glazer is doing this simply because it’s going to increase his wealth.
“If the value of United’s shares go up and the Glazer family has 75 per cent of them… When the tide goes up, all the boats rise.
“Given that they have all of the B shares, which have 10 votes each, that means the potential opportunity for fan influence is very much diluted.
“So, for me, it seems like a fairly cynical way to increase the wealth of the Glazers while pretending to listen to the concerns of fans.”
United are currently 2nd in the Premier League table with two games remaining.
They face Villareal in the Europa League final on 26 May.
