Khvicha Kvaratskhelia has well and truly burst onto the scene this season since completing a summer move to Napoli.
The 21-year-old winger, who has earned complimentary nicknames including the ‘Georgian Messi’ and ‘Kvaradona’ thanks to his eye-catching displays in Serie A and the Champions League, has been one of the standout performers anywhere in Europe during the 2022-23 campaign so far.
Picked up from Georgian side Dinamo Batumi following several years in Russia with Lokomotiv Moscow and Rubin Kazan, ‘Kvara’ as he’s also known has scored eight goals and registered a further 10 assists in his first 17 appearances for Napoli.
His most-recent performance was on Tuesday night, a tough game away at last season’s Champions League finalists Liverpool.
Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez, Kvaratskhelia still showed glimpses of why there’s so much hype around him right now.
In fact, it took Kvara less than two minutes to silence the home crowd after finding himself in a one-on-one duel with Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Footage from the stands has emerged and one fan can be heard shouting: “Go on, Trent. F***ing hit him, Trent!”
Kvara responded by producing a sublime nutmeg on Alexander-Arnold before spraying a beautiful left-footed pass to Matteo Politano on the opposite flank.
The lad is a proper baller, isn’t he?
Napoli signed Kvaratskhelia for a reported fee of €10-€12 million but any club wanting to sign him in 2023 would need to pay at least five times that amount.
Thanks in part to Kvara, unbeaten Napoli currently sit top of the Serie A table, having secured 10 wins from their opening 12 fixtures.
Following the game at Anfield, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp insisted that Alexander-Arnold had a decent game against the “cheeky” Kvaratskhelia overall.
“He has speed, he is cheeky, he goes inside, he can go outside, that makes it always really difficult,” Klopp said of Napoli’s No. 77, per Goal.
“A good player and I thought Trent played a really good game against him, he was really on fire, he was really in, didn’t get frustrated by one or two situations where he was second-best, stayed in the game and I liked Trent’s game tonight.”
Nevertheless, Trent will surely be glad that he won’t have to defend against Kvaradona again any time soon.
He’s a full-back’s worst nightmare.
