Paris Saint-Germain had plenty of chances but couldn’t convert in a 1-0 loss to Liverpool on Wednesday night at the Parc des Princes in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 clash.
The Parisians dominated much of the first half, outshooting Liverpool 12-1, but couldn’t break through. Luis Enrique’s squad thought they had taken the lead when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia curled a shot into the top-left corner, but VAR ruled him offside by the slimmest of margins.
Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker was key to keeping PSG off the scoreboard, making four first-half saves and adding five more after the break. Despite PSG’s relentless pressure, it was Liverpool that found the late breakthrough.
In the 87th minute, Alisson launched a long ball to Darwin Nunez, who won a duel and set up substitute Harvey Elliott. The young midfielder stayed composed and slotted the ball past Gianluigi Donnarumma, giving Liverpool the upper hand heading into the second leg.
After the match, Kvaratskhelia spoke to Canal+ and shared his frustration with the result. Moreover, the former Napoli standout noted that the Ligue 1 side should’ve come away with the win over the Reds.
“I think we had a lot of chances to score,” Kvaratskhelia said (h/t Canal Supporters). “We deserved much more tonight. It wasn’t difficult tonight, we showed them that we were the better team. We deserved to win or at least a draw. It’s football. We need to prepare for the return leg and be ready to give everything.”
The Georgian was asked about his disallowed goal, which was ruled offside by inches.
“I was really sad that it was disallowed, I was happy,” Kvaratskhelia added. “That’s how it is, it’s football. I just have to keep working very hard, and the results will come for me and for the team.”
