Swansea City co-owner Jason Levien has revealed that the club were ready to make West Bromwich Albion forward Karlan Grant the club’s highest earner on transfer deadline day.

Indeed, that was before the proposed loan move from the Baggies fell through at the last minute.

The Swans were keen to add to their forward options after selling Michael Obafemi to Burnley earlier in the window.

When discussing the failed attempt to bring Grant to the club in a meeting with Swansea City Supporters’ Trust last night, Levien revealed an eye-catching financial detail, explaining that Grant would have been taking home the highest weekly wage at the Swansea.com Stadium had he signed.

“Jake (Silverstein) and I have spent many hours and I’ve talked with Josh (Marsh) at length about this and Jake and Russ (Martin) have spoken about it as well,” Levien told the Swansea City Supporters’ Trust meeting, via WalesOnline.

“There’s a lot to learn from this. I think we’ve got an execution. We’ve got to be quicker. We’ve got to have more names on our list, maybe be a little broader in our scope.

“We’ve got to create our own set of deadlines outside of the deadlines provided for by the league and by the governing body.

“We ultimately had a player who we agreed terms with, who we were told the club agreed to terms with, who would have been the highest-paid player on the squad on a weekly basis, who had a prolific goalscoring track record in past years.

“But we went to the deadline and, literally as the moment the deadline hit, the other side decided it wasn’t the right decision which was outside of our control.”

The Swans’ failed pursuit of Grant meant that the club failed to make any additions to Russell Martin’s squad ahead of the remainder of the campaign.

The club currently sit 12th in the Championship standings at present, although, they are just four points behind the play-off places.

The Swans face Birmingham City at home in league action on Saturday afternoon.

The Verdict

I find this an interesting revelation to be honest.

Indeed, one is inclined to say that such details perhaps did not need to be made public, however, in some ways, perhaps Levien felt pressured to reveal such information.

Indeed, given it was made at the meeting with the supporters trust, he may have felt he owed them an explanation and revealing that you were willing to make a player your highest paid weekly player sort of suggests the club couldn’t do any more.

Organisationally they could have, though, and it sounds as though Levin, Silverstein and Marsh will address that moving forwards.

For now, though, Swansea must make do with what they have as Russell Martin aims to steer them in the right direction.
