Portsmouth Chief Executive Officer Andy Cullen has admitted that the club do not want to compromise their search for a winger by rushing their recruitment.

Pompey are currently looking to bolster their options in this particular position after sanctioning Marcus Harness’ departure last month.

Harness joined Ipswich Town in a deal which saw Joe Pigott head in the opposite direction on loan.

Despite being linked with several players in recent weeks, Portsmouth have yet to sign a new winger.

Although Pompey head coach Danny Cowley is able to turn to Michael Jacobs, Ronan Curtis and Reeco Hackett-Fairchild for inspiration, the arrival of another player who is capable of playing in this role could potentially help the club reach new heights in the third-tier.

Having secured a point in their clash with Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough last weekend, Portsmouth will be hoping to build upon this encouraging display by defeating Lincoln City on Saturday.

Ahead of this clash, Cullen has offered an insight into the club’s pursuit for a winger.

BBC South journalist Andrew Moon on Twitter, Cullen said: “We’ve still got 30 days of the transfer window to go, we’d like to do that business as quickly as we can… but we don’t want to compromise.”

The Verdict

Whereas Cullen does make a valid point regarding Portsmouth’s unwillingness to compromise when it comes to signing a player in this particular position, he will be wary about the competitiveness of the transfer market.

Taking this into consideration, Pompey will need to move quickly if they identify a player who they believe will be a good fit for the club.

Given that Curtis has provided 71 direct goal contributions in the third-tier and Jacobs has been involved in 68 goals at this level, the arrival of another player who has a good track-record of delivering the goods in this division could boost Portsmouth’s hopes of challenging for a top-six finish.

Set to play five league games this month, it will be interesting to see whether Pompey are able to bring in a new player in the coming weeks.
