Costa Rica international Jewison Bennette looks to be on the verge of linking up with Championship outfit Sunderland, with Herediano head coach Hernan Medford confirming that the teenager is heading to the Stadium of Light.

News emerged from the Central American country early on Monday from reporter Kevin Jimenez, who revealed that a deal was in the final stages to take Bennette to Wearside.

The winger, who only turned 18 in June, became a Costa Rica international last August, which made him the youngest player to ever play for the nation competitively, and also went on to be their youngest player in a World Cup qualifier.

Yes No

Herediano, who have won the Costa Rican Primera Division 29 times, handed Bennette a debut in August 2021 and he went on to make 31 appearances for the club that season, assisting four times.

The left-winger has already notched two goals and an assist in four outings in the new Costa Rican season, which has seemingly led to Sunderland making their move, and Herediano boss Medford is all for the youngster’s move.

“The boy deserves it, he has done things well,” Medford told Radio Columbia 98.7 FM.

“He has been talked about a lot; he has been given advice.

“It’s a very competitive league, but Jewison has the ability.”

The Verdict

Even though there must be doubts on Bennette’s ability to get a work permit as he doesn’t meet the new criteria initially, Sunderland must be pretty confident in the teenager being able to secure one if they’re on the verge of his capture.

Looking at clips, Bennette appears to be a raw talent, but a talent he is with pace and trickery in abundance.

Costa Rica took a chance on him last year and handed him an international debut at the age of 17, so that shows what the national setup thinks about him.

It’s not known as to whether Bennette would go straight into Alex Neil’s squad or if a loan move would be on the agenda, but it does show that Sunderland are scouring the globe for new recruits, which has got to be exciting for the fans.
