The South Wales are said to be one of a number of clubs that are interested in signing the Black Cats’ top scorer, with Stewart leading the way in the scoring charts by quite some distance at the Stadium of Light.

Given the striker’s importance to the cause, it appears unlikely that Lee Johnson or even the club’s wider hierarchy for that matter would be open to selling their most prized asset at this stage of the campaign.

Now Phillips has suggested that the player himself will have to force through a move if he wants to play at a higher level, as he stated the following recently:

“Sunderland would never let him go though, no way. The only way he would go is if he does a Josh Maja and forces his way out. It would require Ross Stewart to say he wants to leave.”

Stewart is under contract with the Black Cats until the summer of 2023 and is seemingly settled in the North East.

He has 18 goals in 27 games to his name this season.

It would be strange if Stewart was to give up his hopes of achieving promotion with Sunderland in order to move to Swansea City and for that reason it appears a move would be unlikely at this time.

Add to the fact that he wouldn’t want to rock the boat by looking to force through a move and it seems all the more likely that he will be staying put.

It is inevitable that his strong performances will attract interest from elsewhere, but it appears unlikely that he’ll be leaving anytime soon.

This could however be a subject worth revisiting if the Black Cats fail to achieve promotion this term.
