RB Leipzig have struggled of late with successive defeats against Borussia Dortmund – which ended their unbeaten start in the Bundesliga – and Celtic in the Champions League. An improvement was needed against Borussia Mönchengladbach in the Topspiel and although a disappointing first half, Kevin Kampl felt the team improved after the break.
“It’s difficult to say what the reason was in the first half,” Kampl told reporters. “The two recent defeats certainly contributed to it. We really wanted to go into the break with a feeling of success. We lost far too many easy balls. Then they switched to the transition game, which they do very well.
“In the second half, we pressed and gave it our all. I can’t blame the team for the second half. We lost the last two games because we didn’t have the intensity, didn’t win the challenges, didn’t run enough. That was very different in the second half.”
Playing out a 0-0 draw against Borussia Mönchengladbach leaves Marco Rose’s side five points behind leaders Bayern Munich, who remain unbeaten after 10 games after Saturday’s 1-0 win against St. Pauli.
After the international break, RB Leipzig have games against struggling Hoffenheim, Wolfsburg and Holstein Kiel, while playing Inter in the Champions League and Eintracht Frankfurt in the DFB Pokal.
