The European Super League, which was announced yesterday has faced a tremendous amount of backlash from fans and organisations all across the world of football. In a staggering turn of events, many players and clubs, including those originally among the founding clubs of the ESL, have now spoken out against it.

Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne, is easily the biggest name so far to do so. On his Twitter account the Belgian made a heartfelt statement calling for football to unite and prevent the spirit of the game from being lost.

De Bruyne joins Man City coach Pep Guardiola, and Manchester United players Luke Shaw, Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford among many others to have directly or indirectly voiced their criticism of the Super League project spearheaded by Real Madrid chief Florentino Perez.

The midfielder, who recently signed a new deal with City was intent on keeping the fundamentals of football alive, as he said “the most important word is COMPETING”. His post has resonated with the tons of fans who have been against the ESL project from the moment it was announced and perhaps rightly so.

Barcelona themselves, will also seemingly be a part of the domino effect of clubs who may pull out of the breakaway competition, joining the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City and reportedly more.
