Chelsea forward Sam Kerr has marked her contract extension with a goal with the Australian international netting for The Blues in a 1-0 UEFA Women’s Champions League victory over Servette FCCF at Kingsmeadow this evening.

In a game which will not live long in the memory, Kerr popped up with the only goal 23 minutes from time as Chelsea made it three wins out of four in the group stage.

Chelsea started the game quite brightly and Fran Kirby tested visiting keeper Inês Teixeira Pereira after 10 minutes. That was as close as The Blues came to breaking the deadlock in the opening half-hour with chances remaining very much at a premium.

Emma Hayes’ side did have one other good opportunity to score during the opening 45 minutes. Millie Bright found Beth England in the box but Pereira saved her effort before Monica Mendes hacked the ball away.

The second half saw Sophie Ingle head straight at Pereira from a corner kick before Jonna Andersson saw a goal-bound effort bravely blocked by Elodie Nakkach.

Chelsea were then awarded a penalty but this was revoked when the referee determined that England had committed a hand ball before Jade Boho Sayo twice tested home keeper Zecira Musovic either side of a Mendes effort.

The winning goal came 23 minutes from time from a familiar source. Kirby delivered a pass to fellow forward Kerr and the Australian did the rest, firing into the far corner of the net to cap-off a fine week which has seen her agree a two-year contract extension at Kingsmeadow.

Amandine Soulard was dismissed for the visitors seven minutes from time before Chelsea boss Hayes handed summer signing Lauren James her long-awaited debut at the death as the game ended 1-0.

Chelsea now turn their attentions to Sunday’s home fixture against managerless Birmingham City in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League.
