After breaking the world transfer record to sign Naomi Girma from San Diego Wave, Chelsea have wrapped up their January window with the addition of England international Keira Walsh.
The midfielder has signed for the Women’s Super League champions on a four-and-a-half year deal from Barcelona. Sources in Spain reported the total deal would be worth up to £800,000. Chelsea sources reportedly would not confirm the figure but said it is lower than the quoted amount.
Walsh knows the WSL well, having previously played for Manchester City. The 27-year-old won eight trophies with the Citizens, including the 2016 WSL title, before making a world record move to Barcelona in 2022.
The English midfielder also enjoyed a trophy-laden spell in Spain, winning multiple titles, including the UEFA Women’s Champions League, a trophy Chelsea are determined to secure this season despite their domestic dominance.
The Blues, under new manager Sonia Bompastor, are building on their success and enjoying their best-ever start to a league season. Walsh’s arrival could be instrumental to maintaining their dominance and driving their continued growth.
Walsh has spent the past three-and-a-half seasons thriving in Barcelona’s system, playing alongside world class talents like Aitana Bonmatí and Alexia Putellas, both two-time Ballon d’Or winnesr. Walsh has excelled in a team widely regarded as one of the best in women’s football, yet now feels the time is right for a new challenge.
Meanwhile, Chelsea desperately need a deep-lying playmaker following Melanie Leupolz’s departure and Sophie Ingle’s injury. Walsh’s arrival makes sense on all levels.
Her presence will allow midfielders like Erin Cuthbert, Sjoeke Nüsken, and Oriane Jean-François the freedom to push forward while she orchestrates play from deep.
Walsh excels at dictating the tempo, boasting exceptional passing ability, vision, and reading of the game. Beyond her technical qualities, she stands out for her defensive awareness, off-the-ball intelligence, and ability to recover possession efficiently.
Walsh’s move to Chelsea is more than just a high-profile transfer. It’s a strategic shift for both player and club.
Chelsea are looking to solidify their domestic dominance and finally conquer Europe, and Walsh could be the missing piece in their Champions League ambitions.
For the English midfielder, this move offers a fresh challenge at a pivotal moment in her career, bringing her back to familiar territory with the opportunity to shape the future of Chelsea’s midfield.
