Former Man Utd midfielder Roy Keane thinks the Red Devils will be Man City’s biggest challengers next season for the Premier League title.

The Citizens won the Premier League title with three games to spare with Arsenal, who led the standings for most of the season, eventually finishing five points behind them in second place.

Man Utd finished a further nine points back but qualified for the Champions League alongside Newcastle in a successful campaign.

The Red Devils also won the League Cup earlier this term in Erik ten Hag’s first season as manager with another chance of silverware next weekend when they take on Man City in the FA Cup final.

When asked who he sees as Man City’s biggest challengers next term, Keane replied: “I’m going to go for Manchester United.

“I hope it comes from United. It will depend of course on the takeover and the recruitment this summer because they need a world-class striker.

“You would hope to think United can challenge next year but it’s going to be very, very difficult because Man City are brilliant and have a great, great manager.”

Man Utd are currently in the middle of a possible takeover with Sheikh Jassim and Sir Jim Ratcliffe vying for control of the club after the Glazers put the Red Devils up for sale last year.

There are worries among the fanbase that the takeover could rumble on for weeks or months and impact Ten Hag’s transfer plans this summer.

with Tottenham’s Harry Kane understood to be Ten Hag’s top target this summer.

And Keane reckons West Ham’s Declan Rice would be a “decent signing” and hopes Man Utd can get a deal for Kane over the line.

When asked specifically about rumoured interest in Kane and Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount, Keane replied: “I wouldn’t be so sure about Mount. They’re going to be linked with lots of players but the one that would excite you is Kane.

“[Mount] has just gone off the boil a little but I know he bounced back and he’s got quality. I was raving about him a few years ago but he’s just gone missing the last year – a few injuries, the fact he can’t get in a bad Chelsea team. I wouldn’t be hanging my hat too much on him in terms of improving United and closing the gap. He’s a good player but would he improve Man United? I’m not so sure.

“I think Rice would be a decent signing, but in terms of the excitement and the goalscoring, you’d go all out for Kane. But can you see Spurs selling him to Man United? Very, very difficult.”
