Underdogs, comeback victories, late winners – those are just some of the things that make us all love football.
And in tonight’s Euro 2024 qualifying showdown between Kazakhstan and Denmark, we got all three.
After going 0-2 down within half and hour thanks to the incredibly in-form Rasmus Højlund, Kazakhstan looked poised to succumb to another defeat.
But dramatically, three goals in the final 17 minutes of the match saw the hosts soar to an unlikely and historic victory against a Denmark side that sits miles above them in the FIFA world rankings (114th compared to 10th!).
Abat Aimbetov’s header at the back-post snatched victory and sparked wild scenes around Astana Arena, as the hosts secured a historic win in European Championship qualifying history. In the last four years, they have only beaten San Marino and Scotland.
They will be without Aimbetov’s heroics looking forward though, as he picked up two yellow cards (one of which was for his game-winning celebrations) and was sent off.
No Kazakhstan supporter will ever forget the jubilation of what Magomed Adiev’s men pulled off. Group H has been blown wide open.
Who says the international break is boring?
