The fact that German international Kevin Trapp is still only training individually leads Kicker to the conclusion that Brazilian goalkeeper Kaua Santos will again start for Eintracht Frankfurt this weekend. The Eintracht goalkeeper debate thus crops up once again. Santos – called upon on late notice to fill in for Trapp in the Europa League – also performed well in his last Bundesliga start against VfL Bochum.
The 21-year-old’s horrible stumble against Mainz 05 in the final Bundesliga round of the 2024 calendar year seemed to cement Trapp’s place in goal. Santos’ excellent outing against Ajax in the Europa League, followed up by a top-class performance against Bochum nevertheless gives SGE head coach Dino Toppmöller something to think about.
Santos earned perfect marks in many German press sources following the 1-3 away win against Bochum. Six memorable saves and a 72 percent passing rate ensured he also earned team-of-the-week honors in plenty of papers. At the age of 34, Trapp is considered well past his prime. The nine-times-capped German international’s recent shin injury seems to have spared Toppmöller a tough choice for now.
Fourth-placed Frankfurt face VfB Stuttgart in the Saturday evening Topspiel this weekend. A massive win against the 2023/24 Bundesliga runners-up could help out the RheinMainAdler’s pursuit of a top four finish immensely. If Santos sparkles yet again, Toppmöller may wish to continue to roll with the future prospect for the duration of the season.
