The defender spent 13 years with the Dutch side before joining Roma for €14 million during the 2017 summer transfer window. Asked about what it was like to play against his former club, Karsdorp admitted it was tough but that raising the trophy made it worth it.

“It’s tough playing against your former club. On top of that I started cramping after sixty minutes and was worried I strained a muscle,” he told Sky Sport.

“We had to suffer a lot, particularly in the second half, but we brought it home. This trophy means a lot because not many of us in the team have won silverware before. Plus it’s the club’s first European trophy so I’m incredibly happy.”

He added, “I don’t care if people say ‘Oh, it’s only the Conference League’, I really don’t give a s**t. I apologise for being vulgar but it’s an important trophy.”

Asked to assess his season from an individual level, the Dutchman believes he still has plenty of room for improvement.

“I can absolutely say this isn’t my best. I was fantastic during my first few years at Feyenoord, I score 1-2 goals with 10 assists.”

“This season wasn’t my best, but I’m happy. Though, I can still do a lot more and I will do so next season.”
