Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge made the unpopular choice to defend the playing of this weekend’s Bundesliga fixtures, citing financial reasons.
Rummenigge’s comments, of course, came prior to the Bundesliga postponing all fixtures until at least the beginning of April.
“At the end of the day, it’s about finances and the big outstanding TV payments to the clubs,” Rummenigge said, according to German broadcasting network DW Sports.
“I think it’s right that under the current conditions, the games this weekend take place.
“Everyone should understand what ending the season would mean for clubs. Most of the revenue comes from the TV sector.
“If this sector were to fail, there are fears that many small and medium-sized clubs will experience liquidity problems. We hope this will end quickly.”
Bayern Munich currently leads the Bundesliga, four points ahead of Dortmund.
