The Saudi Pro League was supposed to represent the next chapter in Karim Benzema’s star-studded career but it’s not exactly gone to plan.

Benzema has struggled to recapture his former glories for Al-Ittihad and things went from bad to worse in Thursday’s AFC Champions League clash with Navbahor.

With their Round of 16 second leg tie finely poised, the evergreen France striker popped up to open the scoring with a header midway through the first half.

The trouble was, Benzema sent it into his own net to give the visitors a slender advantage after the first leg between the two clubs ended in stalemate.

Abderrazak Hamdallah spared his blushes by restoring parity deep in first-half added time before another own goal, this time from Toma Tabatadze, sealed a narrow win.

But the former Ballon d’Or winner must wonder how it has all gone so wrong for him in the Kingdom.
