The BBC era (Bale, Benzema, Cristiano) at Real Madrid lasted five beautiful years, scoring 442 goals between them in all competitions on their way to four Champions League titles.
Though Cristiano Ronaldo was undoubtedly the leader on the pitch, Karim Benzema says without him, the whole project would have been a dud.
“You had a rocket (Gareth Bale) and a goalscorer (Ronaldo), and then there was me, the piece that made it all work,” he told RMC Sport.
Prior to making the move to Real Madrid in 2009, Benzema found himself as Lyon’s number one scoring option, but that all changed when he made the move to the Bernabeu.
“Here, the finisher was Cristiano. I played a different role. I was involved more in the construction of moves and trying to open up spaces.
“For me, he was the best goalscorer even if he played on the left. I moved away to open up space and let him score.”
So far this season, Benzema has been his normal self, scoring a pair of goals and adding an assist in Madrid’s first three matches.
