Borussia Dortmund attacker Karim Adeyemi has suffered an injury setback ahead of their clash with Bayern Munich on April 1, according to Sky Germany.

The 21-year-old injured his muscle fibres during Dortmund’s 4-1 win over Hertha Berlin on February 19. He was training ahead of a Der Klassiker return but has now suffered a setback.

Adeyemi was finally hitting form for BVB before the injury struck. He had scored and assisted before he had to go off against Hertha.

Days before that Hertha Berlin game, he scored the only goal against Chelsea in the first leg of their Champions League tie after a mesmerising run, leaving Premier League record-signing Enzo Fernandez in the dust.

Adeyemi has scored four goals since the turn of the year. His absence will be a massive blow for BVB, who go to the Allianz Arena for a season-defining game.

Dortmund lead Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga with nine games left. Their lead is only one point after the Bavarians lost their last game before the international break against Bayer Leverkusen.

Die Rekordmeister sacked coach Julian Nagelsmann following the loss to Leverkusen.

They have hired former BVB boss Thomas Tuchel to lead the club, and he faces a fight to wrestle the first position back from his former side. He also has a crucial Champions League quarter-final game against Manchester City.

The Bavarian-born Tuchel has been a long-term target for the club. They had tried to get him in 2016 when Pep Guardiola was leaving for Manchester City.

Bayern moved quickly to secure Tuchel ahead of Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham Hotspur. Both clubs were targeting him for their managerial job this summer.

Without Adeyemi, BVB coach Edin Terzic will opt for one of Donyell Malen or Giovanni Reyna in the starting XI.

Malen is the more likely option after impressing in Dortmund’s 6-1 beating of FC Koln before the international break.

Apart from a brief upturn following the 2022 World Cup, Reyna has been disappointing.
