Liverpool’s dismal season continued on Sunday afternoon as they relinquished their grasp on the FA Cup after a fourth round exit on the south coast at the hands of Brighton and Hove Albion who have had The Reds’ number this season.

The sides played out an enthralling 3-3 draw at Anfield, before the southern outfit embarrassed Jurgen Klopp’s men with a 3-0 victory just a few weeks ago, but their dominance over the Anfield side didn’t stop there.

A last gasp winner from Kaoru Mitoma saw the defending champions crash out 2-1 despite taking the lead through Harvey Elliott and looking the better side for the majority of the second period.

Brighton 2-1 Liverpool

In the second period, the game looked like it would be a goal from the visitors that would be the likely method to preventing a replay, but Brighton’s latest star Mitoma was keen to ensure that wasn’t the case.

A set-piece routine in stoppage time saw the ball worked to him at the back post. He took some exceptionally smart touches before firing beyond Alisson to send the Amex into raptures, but the home fans weren’t the only people loving the finish.

Japanese commentary of the winner has gone viral on Reddit for the chaotic nature of their celebration for Mitoma’s goal. The attacker is quickly becoming a new favourite for the East Asian nation.

His finish was just pure brilliance, worthy of winning any cup tie. He showed how composed he was with the ice-cold finish which just gets better when you watch it with the Japanese commentary, seeing just how excited his compatriots are for him.

However, the tie was a stark reminder of the problems Liverpool are facing this year, something is clearly amiss on Merseyside, with The Reds going from being agonisingly close to an unprecedented quadruple to being out of both domestic cups and the title race. It’s also just the small matter of Real Madrid in the Champions League round of 16, a repeat of last year’s final.

It’s like a group of imposters have turned up pretending to be Mohamed Salah and co. this season, that’s just how much of a drop off there’s been in performances. Performances have been that woeful, even the almighty Klopp has been left questioning his ability which just seems so bizarre given the heights of The Reds for the last five years or so.
