Champions League hopefuls Chelsea increased the space between themselves and Manchester United in fifth place to five points, after a comeback 2-1 victory against Dean Smith’s Aston Villa side. Frank Lampard’s men were the dominant force in the fixture right from the off, and this was highlighted by the fact that the Blues had almost 75% of the possession. Despite going down to a Kortney Hause goal in the first half, two quick strikes from Christian Pulisic and Olivier Giroud turned the tie in the London club’s favour in the second period.
Here Are The Chelsea Player Ratings Vs Aston Villa
The Spanish stopper was rarely called into action by the Villans as the Blues were completely dominant right from the opening minute. Made a good save before his parry fell to Hause for the Villa opener.
The skipper had a considerable number of opportunities to cross the ball into the box throughout the fixture but wasn’t up to the mark with his delivery. He picked up both the assists in the end, though.
The German played one loose pass which could’ve hurt the Blues but was solid overall. Didn’t allow either of the Villa strikers any space to run into, and continuously bullied Jack Grealish.
The Dane had an absolute horror moment late on where he could’ve cost Chelsea the match. Looked confident otherwise, and was extremely efficient while distributing from the heart of the defence.
The Spaniard didn’t have the most influential display in his usual position down the right flank but was a constant option on that side. Made some good forward runs and linked-up with Pulisic.
The World Cup Winner was a beast in the holding midfield position tonight, as he seemed to be on the end of almost every clearance that the Villa defence made. Multiple key tackles and good link-up play too.
The Croatian wasn’t able to produce on a level anywhere close to what he offered over the first part of the season. Although he has played some good passes but needs to start dribbling through the lines again.
The Englishman’s return is one that Chelsea fans have been waiting for, but the lack of match sharpness was apparent to see with his rustiness on the ball. Was subbed off in the second half.
The starlet didn’t have the most fluent of performances in the middle of the park but showed promise with a long-range bullet in the first-half. The Blues’ primary catalyst for advanced pressing.
The Brazilian picked up some right positions all through the first half but wasn’t able to generate anything meaningful in the final third. Worked hard off the ball and tracked back as well.
The Frenchman didn’t have the best of outings leading the line, as he wasn’t offered too much space by a deep Villa defence line. Stepped up when it mattered though and scored the Blues’ winner.
The American speedster came on as a second-half substitute and had an immediate impact in the final third. Induced some energy in attack and was at the right place to tap in the Chelsea equaliser.
The Englishman was thrown on as Lampard tried to add some more firepower to his front-line. Played some excellent forward passes and looked sharp in possession as well.
The young forward had a brilliant scoring opportunity from a set-piece but ended up directing his close-range header wide. Didn’t look as composed as he has usually done in the opposition box.
Didn’t have time to make an impact.
