Kansas City Current is in hot form. The Current have accumulated an NWSL-record 57 goals this season and have officially booked a playoff spot in preparation for taking on North Carolina Courage. They have had some of the biggest elimination matches throughout these teams' history, but these two sides are about to face what could be one of the most defining fixtures of the whole tournament, testing one's patience.
Kansas Current is a scoring machine with 57 goals this season. Considering CPKC Stadium, where this Saturday's match will go down, has been a nightmare for visiting defenses with 37 goals scored in their home field, it's no exaggeration. This gives Kansas strong psychological leverage as they are playing in their territory in the first stadium built exclusively for a women's pro soccer team in the country where the crowd acts as the twelfth player.
Current's forward, Temwa Chawinga, has been in great form this season. With 20 goals and an intensity that keeps any defense on high alert, Chawinga not only clinched the Golden Boot but also solidified her position as one of the league's most dangerous forwards. There is little doubt that Courage is going to need double teaming power to contain the power Kansas City's offense will bring, which is also counting on another important piece in breaking through opposing defenses, Debinha. North Carolina Courage: Sólida Defense and Legacy of Caution
North Carolina Courage comes in with a respectable backline and boasts consistency. Having conceded just 28 goals this season, Courage is among the most solid defenses in the NWSL. In defense, there is Kaleigh Kurtz, who has played every minute this season and guards the backline with a keen sense of when to hold the line. Moreover, Kurtz is one of the league's "Iron Women"-a true endurance and rare consistency at the same time.
That defensive balance will be of essence as the side confronts Current, which, unlike most teams, launches an attack with almost everything possible at their disposal-from pure, blistering speed to well-placed shots or powerful aerial plays. However, playoff history has also shown that Courage are a hard nut to crack. With a +9 goal differential and four clean sheets in knockout rounds, Courage brings experience and composure; those features might make all the difference in this do-or-die match.
This is not the first time Kansas Current is meeting North Carolina Courage in the playoffs, and that rate of recurrence brings only higher stakes. This Saturday's game marks the fourth time since 2022 that the two teams will face off in an elimination match, a rivalry grown to be one of the NWSL's most intense.
Their last six regular-season games were all decided by the same goal, a trend that speaks volumes not only about balance and nail-biting competition but about their dynamic. The series is even between them, as each team took one in the regular season. Another fact that contributes to the game at hand being one of unpredictability is this. Having in mind their previous games, where Current won against Courage by 2-0 in NWSL x Liga MX Femenil Summer Cup, the Courage team comes to revenge, whereas Current wants to prove their dominance home.
This matchup presents an opportunity for Courage to regain their respected standing in the NWSL. The club has already earned its position with past playoff wins and knows the value of a solid defense. As much as the visiting fans will try to make their presence known, the roar of the home crowd promises to make Kansas City a hostile place-something Courage will need to overcome.
