FC Bayern beat SC Freiburg 2-0 on Sunday, winning their first Bundesliga home match this season. Harry Kane handed Munich the lead from the spot late in the first half, before Thomas Müller rounded off the final scoreline in the second half to mark his milestone match in style. The Bavarian made his 710th competitive appearance for Bayern when he came on around the hour mark, surpassing Sepp Maier's record of 709.
Bayern lined up with Manuel Neuer in goal and Joshua Kimmich, Dayot Upamecano, Minjae Kim and Raphaël Guerreiro in defence. Aleksandar Pavlović, Jamal Musiala, Michael Olise, Mathys Tel and Serge Gnabry featured in midfield, with Kane leading the line. Müller, Kingsley Coman, João Palhinha, Konrad Laimer and Leon Goretzka came on for Olise, Tel, Pavlović, Musiala and Upamecano in the second half.
It was all Bayern in the first half, although clear-cut chances were few and far between. Kane hit the side-netting from a tight angle before Lukas Kübler only just beat Musiala to Gnabry's pass. Munich set up camp in Freiburg's half and Olise saw an effort saved before Tel fired wide.
Bayern were awarded a penalty for handball on review shortly before half-time, with Kane dispatching his 37th Bundesliga goal having received the 2023/24 Torjägerkanone prior to kick-off. Gnabry saw a shot blocked, but Kane's goal from the spot was all that separated the sides at half-time.
Freiburg gained a foothold as the game entered a very scrappy phase. Neuer showed good reactions to deny a ricocheting Patrick Osterhage effort on the hour mark. Ten minutes later Coman had a shot blocked and fired just wide on the rebound, but Munich made it two with a quarter-hour to go, when Gnabry's chip found Müller, who produced a fine first touch and beforing firing home.
Neuer denied Roland Sallai before Freiburg were awarded a penalty for handball in injury time, but Lucas Höler fired over as Bayern sealed a deserved victory.
Their second win takes Bayern into second place behind Heidenheim on goal difference in the nascent Bundesliga table. A number of players will now go off and join their countries for the international break before the Reds return to action on 14 September, when they travel to face Holstein Kiel in the Bundesliga.
