Kalvin Phillips is set to remain at Manchester City this summer despite making just two starts for Pep Guardiola’s side since a £42 million switch from Leeds United.

Phillips was one of six additions to Manchester City’s squad last summer, with the England international moving from Elland Road to the Etihad Stadium after eight years at his boyhood club, Leeds United.

The 27 year-old signed a six-year contract with the Premier League champions, joining for a transfer fee which could rise to £45 million, dependent on performance related bonuses.

Pep Guardiola has handed just two starts to the Englishman, who has endured an injury plagued first campaign in East Manchester.

Phillips underwent surgery for a recurring shoulder injury last year and was labelled as “overweight” by Guardiola following his return from the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The midfielder is yet to start a Premier League match for City, though featured in recent wins against Bournemouth, Bristol City, RB Leipzig and Burnley.

Despite a challenging start to life at the Etihad Stadium, Phillips looks set to remain at the club beyond this season.

Pete O’Rourke reports that the 27 year-old is “determined” to break into the City team and therefore “wants” to remain with the Sky Blues.

Manchester City also have “no plans” to sell the former Leeds midfielder, as the Blues prepare for a significant overhaul of their midfield in the summer transfer window.

Ilkay Gundogan and Bernardo Silva could both leave the club at the end of the season, with Gundogan’s current contract set to expire following the conclusion of the campaign.

Meanwhile, PSG have recently reignited their interest in Bernardo Silva, who had been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona last summer.

Phillips has been subject to transfer interest from former club Leeds and also West Ham, with the Hammers potentially needing to replace captain Declan Rice ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

Everton were also interested in signing the City midfielder on-loan in January, following the appointment of Sean Dyche as manager.
