Kalvin Phillips: Gareth Southgate explains England omission and offers Euro 2024 hope | OneFootball

Gareth Southgate says he is “keen” to select Kalvin Phillips for Euro 2024, but admitted his form has “not been good enough” to deserve a call-up this month.

The 28-year-old midfielder has endured a very tough start to to his loan spell at West Ham, being directly responsible for the Hammers conceding a goal just three minutes into his debut against Bournemouth and then later sent off at Nottingham Forest.

Phillips had made just two Premier League starts in a year-and-a-half since joining Manchester City, with Pep Guardiola revealing publicly that the former Leeds stalwart was not in his plans.

He played a starring role in a two-man midfield alongside Declan Rice as England reached the final of Euro 2020, but Southgate has omitted him for friendlies this month against Brazil and Belgium in a fresh blow to his chances of making the Euro 2024 squad.

Southgate said on Thursday: “I think he [Phillips] knows exactly what we think of him. I think we’ve show that support.

“A good version of him is a good player for us. That’s why we’ve supported him like we have.

“We don’t have many players of that profile. Unfortunately, his form hasn’t been good enough. He has all the attributes to force his way back in, and we’re very keen for him to do that.”
