Chelsea look set to complete the signing of Kalidou Koulibaly in the coming days.
The Senegalese superstar will swap Napoli for west London in a deal that could see him earning somewhere in the region of £160,000 per week.
That would make Koulibaly the fifth highest-paid centre back in the Premier League as Chelsea look to fill the significant hole that will be left by Antonio Rudiger.
With the signing of Raheem Sterling now all but complete, the Blues have shifted their focus to the heart of the rearguard, identifying Koulibaly as the ready-made replacement for the German Rudiger.
Hardly a transfer window has passed of late that hasn’t seen Koulibaly linked with one of the European superpowers and it seems the long-running saga will finally have a conclusion.
For Chelsea, it represents a very handy signing indeed with Koulibaly rated as one of the finest centre-backs in the game at the moment.
Koulibaly is cut from an old mould but, for someone of his immense size, possesses a frightening turn of speed.
It’s that acceleration that he will need to lean so heavily on when he comes up against the relentless pace of some of the attackers in the English top flight.
Fortunately, he has already proven he knows how to cope with pace as a clip of him perfectly dealing with a certain Kylian Mbappe shows.
Koulibaly pulled off a perfect slide tackle to rob a full-flow Mbappe of possession and halt a potentially dangerous moment dead in its tracks.
You can see the brilliant moment in the clip below:
Of course, it was in that very same game that Koulibaly showed his truly wild side after once again being faced up by Mbappe.
Instead of deploying yet another sliding challenge, Koulibaly instead shoved one of his teammates right at the French star in the hope that he would stop him.
That hilarious moment, can be seen in the following clip:
Brilliant – you just don’t know what you’re going to get.
Chelsea fans will certainly be hoping he can hit the ground running as they look to close the gap to Liverpool and Manchester City at the top of the table.
If the evidence of that game against Mbappe is anything to go, the fans on the Stamford Bridge terraces could be in for quite a show.
