Brazil legend, Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite, or better known as Kaká, announced his retirement from football earlier this month and solidified his intentions after playing his final home match at Orlando City Stadium four days later.

And we all cried oh so much.

In his prime, Kaká developed into one of the most immaculate midfielders of his generation. Predominantly a playmaker and attacking midfielder, the 35-year-old was capable of creating movement out wide or take the role of a supporting forward.

Never regarded as a typical Brazilian player like most of his countrymen, Kaká will be remembered for his sudden darting runs that you would miss with a blink of an eye.

His former coach at Milan, Carlo Ancelotti said: “He will always try to go vertically rather than horizontally. He will never take the extra, unnecessary touch.”

The Brazilian’s heart-touching retirement speech teared-up the whole football world and in honour of his legendary career, we have selected our favourite Kaká moments of all time.

That time Kaká crushed Celtic’s hearts

Kaká’s breakaway goal for Milan three minutes into extra-time ended Celtic’s European hopes in March 2007.

When Kaká belonged to Jesus

After leading Brazil to the 2002 World Cup, Kaká did all the press interviews wearing his trademark ‘I belong to Jesus’ t-shirt.

“I play because I have a God-given gift,” Kaká says. “I play because He has perfected the gift He gave me in my life. Jesus said ‘without me, you can do nothing’ and I believe this.”

That time Kaká left Manchester United speechless

“He is one of the two best players in the world,” former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson said of Kaká, after witnessing the Brazilian’s magic at Old Trafford in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final during the 2006/07 season.

Kaká completely outshone the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo by putting on a masterful display, scoring twice, and although Milan lost that match 3-2, Kaká’s second goal blew us all away. He would be even better in the return leg.

When 2007 became known as the Year of Kaká

Kaká won the Ballon d’Or a decade ago after helping Milan to Champions League and European Supercup glory. That was the last time somebody else aside from Ronaldo or Lionel Messi have won the prestigious award.

And he didn’t just win it, his victory was the most convincing ever: Kaká had a total of 444 votes compared to Ronaldo’s 167 and Messi’s 189. Add that to his Fifa World Player of the Year award and Club World Cup triumph, and 2007 became known as the Year of Kaká.

That one time Kaká won the Champions League

We can’t get away from Kaká’s epic 2007. He won his only Champions League trophy of his career when Milan beat Liverpool 2-1 in a dramatic final in Athens.

That time Kaká made the pass of the 21st Century

We can’t say anything because this pass has us in complete trance. Thank you, Kaká. Thank you so much.

That time Kaká transferred to Manchester City … well, almost

In 2009, Manchester City’s chief executive Garry Cook accused Milan for ‘bottling’ Kaká’s ‘confidentiality agreement’ to transfer to Manchester.

The almost done deal collapsed in the last minute, after the Brazilian explained that: “To have gone to Manchester City could have been a great project but in the past few days I have prayed a lot to understand what the right team would be and in the end I have decided to remain here.”

Fair enough.

When Kaká scored against Fenerbahçe

Milan were hosting the Turkish side at San Siro for their Champions League Group Stage clash during the 2005/06 season.

“The game was poised at 1-1 and there were only four minutes remaining of the match,” Kaká explained after the match. “I received the ball from Massimo Ambrosini 10 yards inside their half on the left as we broke from our own penalty area.

“I just kept running with the ball past one player, then another, then one more on the edge of the Fenerbahce box before finishing low under Volkan Demirel.”

This makes the list of the greatest goals in Kaká’s Milan career:

When Kaká moved to USA

Kaká touched the hearts of every MLS fan, whether an Orlando City supporter, or not. His presence on the field was treasured and respected and everyone will miss him dearly. Here are his best moments USA:

That time Kaká left Messi in the dust

Kaká is so quick that he left Messi choking on his dust during an international friendly at the Emirates in 2006. Not much else needs to be said here:

That season at the Bernabéu

Kaká moved to Real Madrid for £56m in 2009, just days before his deal was overshadowed by Ronaldo’s new world record transfer.

Injuries hampered his time at the Bernabéu, but it should be noted that he was part of José Mourinho’s title-winning team of 2011/12, when they broke LaLiga’s 100-point mark. Kaká finished that season with eight goals and 14 assists for Madrid.
