Kaizer Chiefs appoint new captain: Who is he?

nacio Miguel has been appointed captain of Kaizer Chiefs for the 2025/26 season, succeeding Yusuf Maart who departed at the end of the previous campaign. However, the Angolan international has revealed that he intends to share leadership responsibilities on the pitch.

Miguel confirmed that whenever defender Zitha Kwinika is on the field, he will wear the captain’s armband—even if Miguel himself is also playing. Should Kwinika not feature, Miguel will resume the role of captain.

This arrangement was demonstrated during Chiefs’ recent match against Richards Bay. When Kwinika was substituted on in the 36th minute following an injury to Aden McCarthy, Miguel immediately passed him the armband.

Explaining his decision, Miguel stated, “I regard Zitha as our ‘madala’—our captain. There was no instruction to hand him the armband, but I felt he deserved it. He has a rich history at this club, and I have great respect for him. His performance never dropped last season, and he serves as a role model and a hard worker for the younger players. Consistent players stand strong even in difficult times.”

He added, “I don’t yet know the lineup for Wednesday, but if Zitha plays, I’ll give him the armband.”
